Issues identified along this section of Heidelberg Road include:

  • Safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Narrow path across bridge and no barrier between motor vehicles and vulnerable road users.
  • Connection to Darebin Creek Trail is inconvenient.

The proposed treatment includes advocating to the Department of Transport and Planning and Parks Victoria for:

  • improved facility over the bridge
  • or an alternate route that doesn’t require pedestrians and cyclists to cross at the Heidelberg Road bridge
  • and a better connection from the bridge to the trail.

It is noted that our boundary is at Darebin Creek, and that the current connection to the Darebin Creek Trail is in the adjacent Council (Boroondara). However, advocating for an improved connection at/near Heidelberg Road would improve access, safety and amenity to all pedestrians and cyclists seeking to access the trail in this area.

Advocate for improved pedestrian and cyclist facility over the bridge and better connection from the bridge to the trail.

Benefits of this suggested treatment

  • Improved safety and amenity for pedestrians and cyclists.

Other considerations

  • Constrained environment (difficult to fit wider walking/cycling facility across existing bridge or impact on vegetation corridor).
