The issues identified on the Como Street and Heidelberg Road intersection include:

  • Traffic congestion and difficulty for drivers wanting to turn right onto Heidelberg Road.

Treatments for consideration:

  • Left-turn only from Como Street into Heidelberg Road (at morning and afternoon peak times) to simplify traffic movements and reduce length of vehicle queues. Intersection safety would also be improved at these times as the likelihood of right-angle crashes is reduced.
Consider no right turn operation from Como Street at morning and afternoon peak times

Benefits of the suggested treatments (left turn out only at morning and afternoon peak times)

  • Reduced complexity for turning vehicles
  • Reduced length of vehicle queues
  • Reduced intersection crash risk (likelihood of right-angle crashes is reduced).

Other considerations

  • As part of this study, we are also suggesting a full time one-way operation for Old Heidelberg Road and Lucerne Crescent to support simplified traffic flow. Please refer to this page. This suggested treatment cannot be implemented in conjunction with the above treatment as it would result in access restrictions to and from the area.
  • All right-turning traffic would deviate to Old Heidelberg Road.
  • Increased traffic in Constance Street and Chamouni Street (anticipated up to 15 additional vehicles per hour during typical morning and afternoon peak times).
