Project background and the shared zone

Council is committed to improving road safety for all road users in Yarra.

Road safety studies investigate safety issues through evidence-based assessments including feedback from the community to understand local experiences.

In 2021 a temporary shared zone was introduced to Rose Street, Fitzroy following recommendations from a Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) study.

We're seeking feedback from the community about how the shared zone is working on Rose Street, Fitzroy including things that are working well or any accessibility or safety concerns on the street. We also want to understand how you use Rose Street, Fitzroy and any access requirements that you may have in the street.

We'll use your feedback to help design changes that make the area safer and more pleasant for everyone.

We'll be exploring:

  • Permanent shared zone design options

This might include things like resurfacing the road, changing footpaths or kerbs, or adding features that limit certain types of traffic.

  • Street furniture or landscaping

Street furniture, landscaping, and other design features to improve safety and the use of the space.

  • One-way street options

The introduction of a one-way street for vehicles in either direction.

  • Any other opportunities to improve conditions

Any opportunities to improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and access to local businesses.

As part of this project, Council will engage an independent expert traffic consultant to carry out a traffic study in Rose Street, Fitzroy. The study will look at how different traffic restriction options could affect traffic flow, access, and safety outcomes associated with different design options.

Due to the impacts on neighbouring streets, any changes to traffic restrictions would need to be approved by the Department of Transport and Planning following any Council decision.
