Traffic impacts and information to consider

  • Creates good opportunities for landscaping, seating and other streetscape improvements
  • Maintains two-way access between Fitzroy Street and Brunswick Street
  • Improves pedestrian safety as vehicles are only expected from one direction for majority of the shared zone
  • Reduces traffic volumes and simplifies movements at intersections
  • Removes two-way passing conflicts for majority of the shared zone
  • Some trips may be less direct due to imbalance of one-way westbound and eastbound streets in the area
  • Greater redistribution of traffic onto surrounding streets due to limited eastbound streets nearby
Traffic impacts on Rose StreetModerate traffic volume reduction of around 40% (45 fewer vehicles per peak hour) at the proposed westbound only section (between Nicholson Street and Fitzroy Street).
Minor traffic volume increase of around 30% (25 more vehicles per peak hour) between Fitzroy Street and Brunswick Street (two-way section) due to westbound traffic restriction.
i.e. Traffic will decrease in the one-way section and increase in the two-way section of Rose Street for this concept option.
Impact on surrounding streetsOverall moderate impact on surrounding streets. Mainly increased traffic on Fitzroy Street and eastbound traffic on Kerr Street and Westgarth Street.

Traffic volume changes on individual streets:
  • Fitzroy Street increased by around 150% (about 55 more vehicles per peak hour) to the north of Rose Street
  • Fitzroy Street increased by around 20% (about 15 more vehicles per peak hour) to the south of Rose Street
  • Spring Street reduced by around 50% (about 40 less vehicles per peak hour)
  • Kerr Street increased by around 10% (about 20 more vehicles per peak hour)
  • Westgarth street increased by around 45% (about 55 more vehicles per peak hour)
Impact on local accessOverall impact on local access is expected to be small.
