Option 1: Bicycle Street

Learn about the changes proposed with this design

To prioritise active transport, increase greenery and improve road safety outcomes for all road users. This option converts the southern section of Wellington Street into a Bicycle Street through a number of treatments and interventions. A Bicycle Street would make this section of Wellington Street mixed use with cyclists and motorists sharing the main traffic lanes. Speeds would be lowered and to calm traffic, vehicles would be diverted off the street through road treatments.

Key considerations for this option

  • Benefits

    • Creates a best-practice, safe and comfortable cycling route for people of all ages and abilities
    • Existing on-street car parking is mostly retained
    • Existing trees and garden beds are all retained
    • New trees and greenery significantly will improve canopy
    • Air and noise pollution are significantly decreased
  • Changes to parking

This change will result in a minor impact with on-street parallel parking on both sides of the street. Currently there are 81 car parking bays between Johnston Street and Alexandra Parade.

There will need to be a reduction of 10 on-street car parking bays within this section of the street bringing the total number of bays to 71.

  • Street trees

Existing median trees and garden beds will be retained with a significant increase in new trees and garden beds to fill in gaps in the tree canopy and vegetation where feasible.

Currently there are 19 trees and garden beds between Johnston Street and Alexandra Parade. Option 1 proposes an increase of 15 bringing the total to 34.

  • Traffic calming and access changes

Speed humps will be installed throughout the street to slow traffic and improve safety.

Non-local traffic will be diverted off Wellington Street through a series of partial modal filters, which are designed to redirect traffic to major arterial roads. These include:

    • Easey Street
    • Keele Street
    • Hotham Street

Option 2: Painted bicycle lanes

Learn about the changes proposed with this design

To prioritise active transport and improve road safety outcomes for all road users, Option 2 transforms the northern section of Wellington Street with unidirectional painted bike lanes.

Key considerations for this option

  • Benefits

    • Wider and safer bike lanes for overtaking and side-by-side riding
    • Public space is significantly increased at Hotham Street and Keele Street
    • Decreased air and noise pollution.
  • Changes to parking

This change will result in a minor impact with on-street parallel parking remaining on both sides of the street. Currently there are 81 car parking bays between Johnston Street and Alexandra Parade.

There will need to be a reduction of 12 on-street car parking bays within this section of the street bringing the total number of bays to 69.

  • Street trees

Existing median trees and garden beds will be removed across the section with new trees and garden beds planted where possible.

Currently there are 19 trees and garden beds between Johnston Street and Alexandra Parade. Option 2 proposes a decrease of 7 bringing the total to 12.

  • Traffic calming and access changes

Speed humps will be installed throughout the street to slow traffic and improve safety.

Non-local traffic will be diverted off Wellington Street through a modal filter on Keele Street, which is designed to redirect traffic to major arterial roads. This modal filter will close the intersection at Keele Street and Wellington Street for cars.
