Option 1: Bicycle Street

Learn about the changes proposed with this design

To prioritise active transport, increase greenery and improve road safety outcomes for all road users. This option converts the northern section of Wellington Street into a Bicycle Street through a number of treatments and interventions. A Bicycle Street would make this section of Wellington Street mixed use with cyclists and motorists sharing the main traffic lanes. Speeds would be lowered and to calm traffic, vehicles would be diverted off the street through road treatments.

Option 2: Protected bicycle lanes

Learn about the changes proposed with this design

To prioritise active transport and improve road safety outcomes for all road users, Option 2 transforms the northern section of Wellington Street with unidirectional protected bike lanes.

Key considerations for this option

  • Benefits

    • Creates a best-practice, safe and comfortable cycling route for people of all ages and abilities.
    • Reduces the risk of conflicts between cyclists and motorists including risks of car-dooring.
  • Changes to parking

This change would have impact to the on-street parallel parking only on the western side of the street. Currently there are 96 car parking bays between Alexandra Parade and Queens Parade.

There will need to be a reduction of 66 on-street car parking bays including 2 accessible bays within this section of the street bringing the total number of bays to 30.

  • Street trees

Existing median trees and garden beds will be removed across the section with new trees and garden beds planted where possible.

Currently there are 29 trees and garden beds between Alexandra Parade and Queens Parade. Option 1 proposes an increase of 3 bringing the total to 32.

  • Traffic calming and access changes

Speed humps will be installed throughout the street to slow traffic and improve safety.
