Additional changes in concept option 2

This option proposes to change the traffic direction to one-way eastbound only between Lulie Street and Trenerry Crescent, along with other safety improvements.

  • One-way, eastbound

One-way eastbound for vehicles between Lulie Street and Trenerry Crescent.

Cyclists and pedestrians can access in both directions.

  • Visibility improvements

Three parking spaces will be removed to improve driver sight lines.

    See affected parking spaces below.

Rich Street intersection

One parking space will be removed on the north-western corner of the Rich Street and Little Turner Street Intersection to improve driver visibility for exiting vehicles.

Trenerry Crescent intersection

Two parking spaces will be removed on Trenerry Crescent to the north and south of Little Turner Street to improve driver visibility for exiting vehicles.

A footpath extension will be provided in place of the northern parking space.

Information to consider for option 2

  • Removes opposing traffic, reducing head on conflicts
  • Better overall safety for pedestrians as vehicles are only expected from one direction
  • More predictable vehicle movements, particularly at intersections
  • Fewer cut through drivers (rat running) in the westbound direction

Risks

  • A one-way eastbound street could increase traffic along Little Turner Street by around 70% compared to when it’s two-way as drivers can only enter and exit in one direction
  • Drivers may go faster as there’s no traffic coming the other way
  • There may be more queuing on Johnston Street to turn into Rich Street and Lulie Street.
  • There may be more queuing on Rich Street and Trenerry Crescent when turning onto Johnston Street
  • Right side loading access may lead to loading activities occurring within the path of through traffic, increasing potential safety risks.
