Yarra City Council endorses Road Safety Plan for Alphington Road Safety Study area.
19 December 2024

Project Background:
Council has received ongoing requests to review and address road safety issues in the section of Alphington outlined in the study area. Council also regularly receives feedback from the community with many reports of conflicts that occur between road user and near misses
In recent years, local schools have expanded which has resulted in an increased demand from the community to undertake a review of actual and perceived road safety issues.
To ensure we captured the views of all these road users, a Road Safety Study required an area wide assessment and community consultation. It was evident from the initial data gathering in 2023 that different sections of the community including school, residential and sports groups have competing interests and concerns.
In January and February 2024, we presented a series of suggested treatments to the area to understand community support and feedback. This feedback helped inform the development of treatments outlined in the Road Safety Plan.
Yarra City Council presented the recommended Road Safety Plan for the Alphington Road Safety Study area at the Council Meeting on Tuesday 17 December 2024.
What did we ask?
For each suggested treatment, participants were asked to indicate their level of support using the following options:
- Very unsupportive
- Unsupportive
- Neutral
- Supportive
- Very Supportive
- Cannot Say
Participants were also able to provide additional written feedback for each suggested treatment if they chose to.
Who did we hear from?
What did we hear?
Community members were invited to indicate their level of support for suggested treatments to help inform how, or whether Council should proceed with the options provided. 138 feedback contributions were provided via the Your Say Yarra online engagement platform, with some of the treatments receiving a higher level of responses than others.
Please note: Community members were not required to indicate their level of support on each of the treatments, just the ones that were relevant to them. On average, the treatments were voted on 109 times with the highest treatment receiving 129 votes of support and the lowest receiving 101 votes of support.
A breakdown of community support levels for each treatment is provided within the engagement report below.
What comes next?
At the Council Meeting on Tuesday 17 December 2024, Council endorsed 11 of the recommended safety treatments to improve the safety of all road users within the study area. 4 of these projects are scheduled to be completed within this financial year, with Council resolving for the pedestrian crossing on Yarralea Street outside Alphington Primary School to be considered for inclusion in Council’s budget process as part of 2025/26 capital works program.
The remainder of the endorsed projects will be included in Council’s long term capital works plan based on initially estimated costs, for future planning, design, and delivery.
Council also resolved to advocate to the Victorian Government and other relevant authorities to promote 6 projects within the study area for completion.
