Community Feedback Summary

In this second stage of consultation, we received 30 surveys, 40 people attend the listening post and 15 traders attended the traders’ meeting. Below is a summary of what we heard:

Preferred Concept:

  • 57% of respondents preferred Option 1: short term
  • 30% preferred Option 2: long term
  • 13% preferred neither option

Do you think any on-street parking along Rose Street should be removed to install a shared zone?

  • 68% of respondents said yes
  • 20% said unsure
  • 12% said no


Other feedback topics identified include:

Accessibility

  • One-way traffic change is not supported by traders
  • One-way change should only be considered on weekends when pedestrians numbers are highest
  • Differing opinions on one-way change from local residents
  • Changing the one-way direction to eastbound
  • Wider footpath on the south side of Rose Street
  • Improved pedestrian links to tram stop on Nicholson Street

Amenity

  • Street lighting upgrades
  • Shared zone design features should extend to Nicholson Street
  • Public toilets in this part of Fitzroy
  • Strong support for greater landscaping with suggestions for plants to use
  • Using advanced canopy trees to curb Urban Heat Island effect in summer

Drainage and infrastructure

  • Ensuring concepts are properly designed for drainage
  • Prevailing drainage issues in the area should be addressed
  • Maintaining Fitzroy Street bluestone and heritage
  • Upgrade Fitzroy Street intersection
  • Removing poles from footpaths
  • Incorporate Water Sensitive Urban Design

Parking

  • Loading areas for deliveries
  • Strong support for removal of on-street parking
  • Some opposition for parking removal
  • Charging on-street parking
  • On-street parking revenue loss

Street cleaning, waste management and maintenance

  • Ensuring shared zone includes future street cleaning, graffiti removal and maintenance
  • Additional street litter bins and street cleaning along Rose Street
  • Not enough done on managing bins and waste collection along Rose Street

Other considerations

  • Any upgrade should be implemented in such a way that would not restrict future private development
  • Food trucks to promote social activity
  • Opportunities for bike share and car share
