Project background

Every four years we are required to review our Road Management Plan (RMP) to ensure it is up to date and reflects the needs of everyone who walks, runs, scoots, cycles and drives around our municipality.

The RMP outlines how we manage, inspect and maintain the roads, laneways, footpaths, kerbs and channels of Yarra, to ensure they are safe for everyone in our community.

What did we ask?

The community were offered the opportunity to review the draft Road Management Plan and provide feedback on the intervention levels on the following road assets:

  • sealed roads
  • traffic control devices
  • shared zones
  • bicycle lanes
  • kerb and channel
  • Footpaths
  • Other

They also were able to provide any other comments they may have on any aspect of the Road Management Plan.

Who did we hear from?

What did we hear?

Key themes relating to the defects on roads and footpaths include:

  • Footpaths should be a higher priority than bike lanes which should be a higher priority than roads.
  • Signs are often twisted or poorly visible to road users.
  • Trees overhang.

Key themes relating to more rapid response timeframes include:

  • The time period between shared zone reviews and Council/State Government response times to urgent maintenance of shared zones needs to be reviewed.
  • The time period between bicycle lane reviews and Council/State Government response times to urgent maintenance on bike lanes needs to be reviewed.

Further information on the themes and individual feedback can be found within the Engagement Report.

What is next?

The adopted Road Management Plan will take effect from 1 November 2025, after which all inspections and defects will be managed in line with this plan.
