Heritage and Celebration
We acknowledge and celebrate our history and proudly support Yarra's LGBTIQA+ precinct and businesses.
Earlier this year we asked for your ideas on what should be included in the new Rainbow Policy. We used this feedback to inform the draft Policy which is now available to review. You now have the opportunity to provide further feedback on this draft before it is finalised and taken to Council for consideration.
Since going out with our stage 1 consultation, we have decided to promote this document from a strategy to a policy. In doing so, we are raising the strategic intent of our Rainbow Strategy to a formal policy, which is a higher-level document within Council. This will provide long-term direction for our community and staff and clear guidelines for decision-making and action.
Using your feedback from stage 1 regarding the 4 priority areas, we have developed the following actions that outline our commitment to our LGBTIQA+ community:
We acknowledge and celebrate our history and proudly support Yarra's LGBTIQA+ precinct and businesses.
We advocate for LGBTIQA+ people in Yarra, foster community connection, a sense of belonging and work towards reducing social isolation.
We promote visibility and maintain accessible LGBTIQA+ spaces.
We focus on improving the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ individuals by supporting all intersections within the community.
These priority areas demonstrate how we will act as a Council to ensure the City of Yarra is a place where heritage and celebration are honoured, inclusion and participation are actively promoted, safer spaces are created for all, and wellbeing is embedded across our services and community life.
We now invite you to review the draft Rainbow Policy and let us know if you have any suggestions on ways we can improve these 4 priority areas.
Have your say before 9am on Monday 15 September 2025.
At the beginning of 2025 you shared your ideas for our new Rainbow Policy. We asked you to provide your feedback on the 4 priority areas we identified to help guide our priorities and actions moving forward. They are:
We acknowledge and celebrate our history and proudly support Yarra's LGBTIQA+ precinct and businesses.
We advocate for LGBTIQA+ people in Yarra, foster community connection & work towards reducing social isolation.
We promote visibility and maintain accessible LGBTIQA+ spaces.
We focus on improving LGBTIQA+ mental health, supporting young people, promoting alcohol-free activities & volunteering.
Your feedback has helped us understand what is working well and what our Policy needs to focus on so we can improve our work in this space.
We have used this to inform the draft Rainbow Policy which will be consulted on before it is considered for adoption by Council.

At Yarra, we believe that everyone has the right to freely express themselves and to feel safe in doing so. We are historically a proud LGBTIQA+ precinct of Melbourne where 15% of residents identify as LGBTIQA+.
It’s now time to step up and start building the next ambitious LGBTIQA+ strategy for 2026-2030. We’ve made a commitment to work together with our LGBTIQA+ community to create a new Strategy that is relevant to their ongoing and emerging needs.
We want Yarra's diverse community to be involved in creating the next LGBTIQA+ Strategy, every step of the way!
In 2024, we reviewed the existing LGBTIQA+ strategy, together with Yarra's Rainbow Advisory Committee. This included an audit of our programs and actions as well as an assessment of ongoing and emerging community needs.
Our current LGBTIQA+ Strategy 2021-2024 has focused on welcoming and celebrating diversity and building an inclusive Yarra through supporting, participating and connecting with our diverse LGBTIQA+ community. The strategy achieved some fantastic outcomes, including:
