Preparing for the future
We’re planning to accommodate 44,000 new dwellings by 2050. That’s why we’re investing in Yarra’s infrastructure, making it easier to move around and improving our open spaces.
Tell us your thoughts on the draft Budget before this consultation closes at 11.59pm on Sunday 17 May 2026.
Every year we develop a Budget that outlines funding for the next financial year and how it will benefit Yarra's community.
This year we’re planning a responsible budget with no new borrowings and continued debt reduction.
With waste, construction, insurance, utilities and other costs rising faster than revenue – and with global instability, including conflict in the Middle East, continuing to place inflationary pressure on the economy – we’re budgeting carefully to protect services now while planning to accommodate significant growth – around 44,000 new dwellings by 2050.
We’re planning to accommodate 44,000 new dwellings by 2050. That’s why we’re investing in Yarra’s infrastructure, making it easier to move around and improving our open spaces.
We’re investing in what people use and see every day. That includes a $40m capital works program prioritising safety, clean streets and parks, and renewing and maintaining key assets.
We’re investing in our digital systems to provide simpler and more responsive day-to-day customer service.
We're keeping our finances strong to support a growing and changing community as well as respond to unexpected or urgent events.
The Long-Term Financial Plan (LTFP) 2026/27 to 2035/36 is a 10-year financial plan. The LTFP outlines the resources required to deliver the Council Plan 2025-29 and the Community Vision 2036 and ensure we are investing in assets the community values; that our services meet the needs and expectations of the community, are affordable and accessible; and that our organisation remains financially sustainable. Council has updated the LTFP to reflect the 2026/27 Budget and the years ahead.
The LTFP is developed in the context of strategic planning principles required under section 89 of the Local Government Act 2020 and form part of Council’s responsible financial program.
