A bit about the project

Are you a dog owner? A cat owner? Do you know what a Domestic Animal Management plan is?

All Victorian Councils are required to complete a Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) every four years.

Over 4 weeks, from 19 April we asked the community across Yarra for feedback on our draft Domestic Animal Management Plan. We reached out to our community via online and in person. We received 27 responses to the online survey, spoke to people in parks and open spaces across Yarra and connected with people at our consultation at Richmond’s Gleadell Street Market on the 6 May.

Throughout the consultation, we also communicated with representatives from animal welfare groups, shelters and pounds, dog walking groups, sporting groups, animal businesses, the Lost Dogs’ Home and the RSPCA.

We received some great recommendations, with strong support for our council park officers in parks and gardens across Yarra and pet education programs.

It was great to see a balance of feedback from both households with animals and non-animal households in our survey. Your feedback tells us that managing shared open space between animals and the rest of the community is very important, particularly in an inner city environment. This feedback can also help shape the spaces we design, create and use.

Following this consultation, our Civic Compliance Unit is working on the final draft of the plan and will present to Council to be formally adopted in the second half of 2017. The adopted plan will be distributed to the wider community shortly after.
