In line with our commitment to safer streets in Yarra, Council conducted an extensive Road Safety Study in 2021 and 2022. Through this study we heard from people who walk, ride and drive in this precinct to help us understand the road safety issues that need to be addressed.

The findings and treatments for this area were presented via Council’s Road Safety Plan that was endorsed on Tuesday 6 December 2022.

Seven projects from the Road Safety Plan are planned for construction between December 2024 and mid-2025 thanks to a $1.454 million investment through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

These projects include treatments at the following locations:

Location:Road Safety Treatment:

Yambla Street and Ramsden Street

  • Installing a raised zebra crossing on Ramsden Street to the east of the intersection.
  • Widening the bicycle cut-through on Yambla Street.
  • Modifying splitter island on Yambla Street to improve visibility and manage vehicle speeds entering the intersection.
Yambla Street, Roseneath Street and Gray Street
  • Adding a raised zebra crossing of Roseneath Street to the west of the intersection.
  • Creating a priority crossing of Gray Street to the south of the intersection.
  • Re-grading the existing ramp on the north side of the intersection to reduce vehicle scraping.
Gray Street, Noone Street and Trenerry Crescent
  • Removing the mid-intersection ‘stop’ and ‘give way’ signage and returning it to a standard ‘T’ intersection.
  • Upgrading the median islands.
  • Raising the pedestrian crossing on Gray Street to the north of the intersection.
Trenerry Crescent between Gray and Maugie Streets
  • Upgrading existing speed humps and installing additional speed humps in both directions.
  • Adding painted bike lanes on the uphill sections of Trenerry Crescent.
  • Painting new lane marking for shared lanes.
  • Centering median islands on the curves of the street.
  • Installing a new speed hump to the north of intersection.
Adding a shared turning lane for drivers turning right from Trenerry Crescent to Maugie Street.
Trenerry Crescent and Abbott Street
  • Installing additional speed humps for drivers approaching the roundabout.
  • Adding zebra crossings on all legs of the roundabout.
  • Painting new lane marking for shared lanes.
Trenerry Crescent and Bath Street
  • Raising the existing zebra crossing.
  • Removing the hook turn lane for bikes and adding a standard right turn lane.
  • Widening the existing cut-through.
Trenerry Crescent and Turner Street
  • Adding zebra crossings on all legs of the roundabout.
  • Painting new lane marking for shared lanes.
  • Installing a new speed bump on the western leg of the roundabout on Turner Street.

This funding has also provided us with the opportunity to make a couple of adjustments to the initially endorsed designs and make the following improvements:

  • Replacing the proposed speed hump on Ramsden Street with a raised zebra crossing to provide better pedestrian connections to Quarries Park.
  • Replacing the proposed at-grade pedestrian crossing on Roseneath Street with a raised pedestrian crossing to improve pedestrian access.

A Notice of Works will be distributed to affected properties closer to the construction date for each of the projects listed in the table above.

These road safety treatments are funded by the Victorian Government though the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, which is providing $210 million to improve the safety of local roads across Victoria.
