Project Update - Quarries Park playground upgrade
2 April 2026
Yarra City Council is progressing with the playground upgrade at Quarries Park in Clifton Hill, following community consultation in October and November 2025.
Purpose of the consultation
Between 20 October and 17 November in 2025, we sought community feedback on the draft Concept Plan (which was based on community feedback received during the first stage of consultation in early 2025).
What did we ask?
We asked the community to have their say on the draft Concept Plan and tell us:
- if the playground shown in the draft concept plan is a space you or your family or children would like to visit and play
- if the play features shown in the draft concept design, offer a wide variety of play options, providing something for everyone
- if the playground shown in the draft concept design respects the surrounding bush setting.
- which proposed key play features (shown on the map above) are the most important to include
- any other comments and suggestions you may have about the draft Concept Plan.
Who did we hear from?
We received a total of 52 responses to the online survey on Your Say Yarra. We also heard a wide range of useful feedback during the pop-up consultation sessions and at a targeted consultation held with Spensley Street Primary School.
What we heard
Community feedback was generally positive, with strong support for water play, flying fox, and diverse play options. Participants said that they valued the natural bushland aesthetic and highlighted the need for more shade, inclusive play elements, sealed accessible paths, and swings and slides for all ages.

Question 4 - Which of the following play features outlined in the draft Concept Plan do you think are most important to include?
- The most popular play elements identified were Water play and Flying Fox, each receiving the highest level of interest.
- The big slide followed closely.
- Other moderately preferred features include Tree Top Play Hide and Tree top Hide, both with around, and Junior play platform.
- Less frequently mentioned elements were Podium platforms, Sand area with mud, Sculptural play nest, and Basket swing.
Question 5 invited participants to share if anything is missing from the draft Concept Plan.
There were 6 themes that recurred in the responses:
- Preserving the natural aesthetic
- Water play
- Shade and seating
- Play equipment variety and inclusivity
- Accessibility and inclusion
- Broader park use and amenity.
Our response
Some of the key responses and changes made to the Concept Plan include:
- we will consider additional vegetation planting
- new play features will be integrated using natural materials and tones to maintain the bushland character
- water play area will feature a DDA compliant sand table to ensure accessibility for children of all abilities
- we will look at opportunities to increase shade throughout the park, including additional tree planting and shade structures where possible, as part of the detailed design
- parking improvements, footpaths, access routes, seating and wayfinding are outside the scope of this playground upgrade but will be referred to Council’s open space and traffic planning teams.
These themes and Council's responses are expanded upon in the Engagement Report (linked below).
