This consultation is now closed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Your feedback will inform the planning services review and help us to continue improving our statutory and strategic planning services.
Yarra City Council has a strong commitment to continuously plan, review and improve our services.
This is vital to ensuring that:
- community expectations and standards are met in a cost-effective manner
- service outcomes are aligned to Council’s long-term strategic objectives
- relevant legislative and policy requirements are met.
As part of this process, we are undertaking a review of our Statutory and Strategic Planning service areas.
This review will develop a roadmap for ongoing improvements to ensure that Yarra planning services are sector leading, inclusive and accessible to everyone in the community.
The different kinds of planning
The Statutory Planning department assesses planning permit applications for new development or changes to land use under the Planning and Environment Act (1987). Statutory Planning is guided by the Yarra Planning Scheme and covers all land within the City of Yarra including commercial, industrial and residential uses. Each property has a set of planning controls that apply to it, consisting of zones and overlays. Subject to the zone and overlays, a planning permit may be required including for sale and consumption of liquor, construction of buildings and works, advertising signage, car parking reductions, removal of vegetation, change of use applications, and the like.
The Strategic Planning department provides strategic planning policy advice and guidance on sustainable land use and development in the municipality. It has responsibility for policy development, strategic plans and the development of appropriate planning controls through the Yarra Planning Scheme. The Yarra Planning Scheme is the set of local planning regulations developed in consultation with the community to ensure the unique characteristics of the municipality are preserved while catering for an increase in population.
