Anne (March 2015 consultation – user generated topic)

Why was there no consultation with the residents directly effected by this park? Surely there should have been a survey first? There is a large park only 5 minutes walk away in Park St and a small one in Nicholson St.

Hi Anne, This is the very first stage of consultation on this proposal, and we are inviting residents to share all their ideas and concerns, so thank you for participating. Yarra’s Open Space Strategy identifies a gap in the open space network in the south of Abbotsford where residents do not currently have easy access to a small local spaces to rest, gather or play for short, frequent visits. There is also a growing demand for more open space as our residential population increases. New medium and high density development, particularly in former industrial precincts like Abbotsford, often have little or no private open space The Strategy specifically recommends investigating the potential to create a new open space at the intersection of Charles and Mollison Street, Abbotsford. It was thought the wide road reserves in this location represent the opportunity to claim some road area and convert it into green space for people. I will also respond to your email with further background information. We hope to see you at the community workshop on 21st March and/or happy to talk through this in more detail. Hi Eamon, Early analysis for this project looked at various 'footprints' for a potential park in this location. We also conducted a traffic assessment of the area to gain a better understanding of existing local traffic and parking conditions and expected impacts of the various park footprints. None of the 'footprints' involve a total closure of the intersection, or would affect access to properties. At this stage of the project we are keen to find out how the community feels about the idea of a park in general. From there we can delve further into options based on the feedback received. We hope to see you at the community workshop on 21st March and/or happy to talk through this in more detail. Fiona O’Byrne, Landscape Architect, 9205 5768.
