Thank you for providing your feedback on our proposal to create a raised priority crossing in Bennett Street. We used your suggestions to finalise the design.
Construction was completed in 2019.
A bit about the project
We’re proposing to construct a raised priority crossing in Bennett Street, Fitzroy North. The new crossing will prioritise people using the Capital City Trail over motorised traffic.
The Capital City Trail is a shared pathway crossing Bennett Street near the intersection with Park Street. Our support for the trail is part of our ongoing commitment to encouraging healthy and sustainable forms of travel, such as walking, scooting and bike riding.
What changes are proposed?
Some of the new features proposed include:
- Bus-friendly flat top road humps
- Colour-coded shared crossing
- New kerb alignments
- New garden beds
- 'Give Way' signage and line-marking
You can view the plan here on this page.
What are the benefits?
The changes will make it safer and more comfortable for people walking, scooting or bike riding on the Capital City Trail to cross Bennett Street. It will encourage people to drive more slowly and safely, and discourage non-local traffic from using Bennett Street and Rushall Crescent. It will also encourage people of all ages and abilities, especially women and children, to use active transport modes more often.
Community feedback and next steps
We recently invited our community to review our initial plan for the crossing and share their feedback. This phase of consultation, which included two pop-up sessions and an online survey, closed on Monday 28 October 2019. We are currently reviewing this feedback and working on finalising the design. We will be providing an update on this page shortly and writing directly to all survey participants .
