About this project

This consultation closed on Monday 8 December 2025. Thanks for having your say on the installation of a new all-weather synthetic futsal pitch at Atherton Reserve in Fitzroy.

Before proceeding with the detailed design, we checked in with the community to understand their thoughts and identify some additional elements that can be considered as we progress with this project.

Fitzroy is one of Yarra’s fastest growing population areas and the addition of a futsal pitch will address an urgent demand for recreational spaces.

This new pitch will replace current line marking and soccer goals at the Reserve and upgrade the space to accommodate the diverse needs of the community in the area. In particular, it will support the needs of residents living in the housing estate near Atherton Reserve as well as the local community in Fitzroy and surrounding suburbs.

The new futsal pitch will be approximately 46 metres by 30 metres in size. It will address concerns raised by the community, by:

  • improving drainage of the futsal pitch will enable year-round use/play
  • making the space more accessible for all ages and abilities.

The Victorian Government announced in May 2025 that they will contribute $200,000 towards this project.

Additional improvements to the reserve

To enhance the experience at the futsal pitch and make the space better for all users, we are considering adding some additional elements, including:

  • A drinking fountain
  • Seating options near the pitch
  • New waste bins
  • Signage for the reserve
  • Fencing style (as illustrated in artist impression)
  • Lighting for the futsal pitch.
