We want to ensure that our LGBTIQ+ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Intersex Queer Plus) community is welcomed, engaged, and included equally in Yarra.

We have a long history of promoting equal rights for our LGBTIQ+ community. We deeply value the vibrancy and uniqueness that diversity brings to Yarra.

That’s why we developed a LGBTIQ+ Strategy to guide our work over the next 4 years. The LGBTIQ+ Strategy was adopted at a Council Meeting in December 2020.

Read our LGBTIQ+ Strategy 2021-2024

There are three key priorities in the strategy, and actions under each of these will be revisited regularly to ensure our work responds to the changing needs of our community.

The key priorities laid out in the plan are:

This includes 2 strategic goals:

  • Recognising and celebrating Yarra’s LGBTIQ+ community.
  • Raising awareness around the issues affecting LGBTIQ+ people.

Examples of year 1 actions under this priority include:

  • Continue to recognise and promote key days and events, for example IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia) and Midsumma.
  • Ensure our communications reflect our diverse community.
  • Identify issues faced by our LGBTIQ+ community and advocate on their behalf.

This includes 2 strategic goals:

  • An inclusive organisational culture that reflects Yarra’s diverse communities.
  • An inclusive, appropriate and responsive Council.

Examples of year 1 actions under this priority include:

  • Include the voices of LGBTIQ+ staff in the development of policies, strategies and programs that affect them.
  • Ensure Yarra Council has data required to respond appropriately to Yarra’s LGBTIQ+ community.
  • Continue to provide training to staff around LGBTIQ+ inclusion.

This includes 2 strategic goals:

  • Providing opportunities for people to join and connect with each other.
  • Supporting and nurturing Yarra’s LGBTIQ+ spaces.

Examples of year 1 actions under this priority include:

  • Foster increased community engagement by supporting and promoting events from service delivery teams, such as Yarra Leisure; Yarra Libraries; Arts and Culture; Aged and Disability; and Family, Youth and Children’s Services.
  • Continue to support LGBTIQ+ related projects and events through our community grants program.
  • Promote safe and inclusive services, groups and venues within Yarra.
