The existing community room adjoining the grandstand was built in the 1980s.
The room is in high demand for community use. It is home to an Italian seniors group who meet there weekly, as well as being available for general hire by the community.
The current facilities are outdated, and there is a clear need to improve them.
Is the community room being upgraded or replaced?
We are proposing to demolish the existing community room and replace it with a new community room with contemporary, fit-for-purpose facilities.
The new community room would be located behind the grandstand (to the north) enabling the room to have a view of the gardens and capture northern light. The community rooms would look out on to a new landscaped garden area.
It would also accommodate the spaces that can’t fit within the grandstand including public toilets, waste management, ground curator store room.
It is proposed that the new community room would accommodate up to 120 people (which is the same capacity as the current room).
Locating the community room behind the grandstand, rather than next to it, would further enhance the grandstand as the centre piece of the precinct.
Will there be more public toilets?
Yes, more public toilets that are accessible all hours for park visitors will be constructed as part of the new community room.
